One Day on Yeongdo: Kangkangee, Huinnyeoul and Taejongdae

Yeongdo sits across the water from Nampo, but its sights are spread across the island rather than gathered around one centre. This route begins near Yeongdo Bridge at Kangkangee Arts Village, follows the western coast through Huinnyeoul Culture Village, and finishes at Taejongdae. The order moves from shipyard lanes to a hillside seaside neighbourhood and then to a coastal park without a large detour back towards the starting point.

The total shown in the itinerary card adds together time spent inside the three places. It does not include waiting for buses, changing services or stopping for a meal, so leave some room around the displayed total.

Why start at Kangkangee?

After crossing Yeongdo Bridge from Nampo, Kangkangee Arts Village is a natural first stop. The route focuses on its outdoor lanes and the waterfront beside the shipyards, so the day does not depend on joining a tour or finding an indoor facility open.

Bus 6 connects the area with Huinnyeoul Culture Village. Walking is also possible, but using the bus preserves more energy for Huinnyeoul’s stairs and for the paths inside Taejongdae later in the day.

How far should you walk at Huinnyeoul?

Lanes run between Jeoryeong-ro and Huinnyeoul-gil, while the Jeoryeong Coastal Trail follows the shore below. You can stay around the village lanes and sea views or descend by the stairways to the coastal path. If you go down to the shore, include the climb back up when deciding how much of the area to cover.

Huinnyeoul remains a residential neighbourhood, so this route does not depend on staying in its lanes late in the day. A meal can fit around Yeongseon-dong near Huinnyeoul or after moving towards Dongsam-dong by the Taejongdae entrance. No restaurant is fixed as an itinerary stop, leaving the choice open to the day’s route and queues.

Finish the day at Taejongdae

Do not plan the Huinnyeoul-to-Taejongdae leg around a single direct bus. Check directions when you leave, then change buses or take a taxi to the park entrance. The registered map point for Taejongdae may sit inside the park, so use the entrance bus stop as the clearer destination when travelling by public transport.

Entry to Taejongdae Resort Park is free, but transport inside the park has separate operating conditions. The Danubi Train is currently suspended for safety inspections, and the operator lists a free loop shuttle from Wednesday through Sunday. The shuttle may stop in poor conditions or because of circumstances on site. Check the official notice and shorten the walking route if it is not running.

Which day works best?

This route is simplest from Wednesday through Sunday. The Taejongdae loop shuttle and the National Maritime Museum of Korea are unavailable on Mondays, while the shuttle also rests on Tuesdays. A Tuesday visit is still possible if you plan to explore Taejongdae on foot.

If heavy rain makes the outdoor coast uncomfortable, replace Taejongdae with the National Maritime Museum of Korea rather than forcing the full outdoor route. The museum is near Taejongdae in Dongsam-dong, but it is closed on Mondays. Check its opening day before relying on it as the indoor alternative.

Returning from Yeongdo to Nampo
