One Day in Gangneung by Bus: Ojukheon, Seongyojang, Gyeongpo and Anmok

Gangneung's main sights are not concentrated around the railway station. This itinerary follows bus 202 through Ojukheon, Seongyojang and the Gyeongpo area, continues to Anmok on the City 1 route, and returns to Gangneung Station on bus 223. The stay times in the itinerary panel do not include waiting or travel time.

Check the direction of buses 202 and 202-1

At Gangneung Station, use bus 202 from the Across from Gangneung Station stop. It serves the intercity and express bus terminals, Ojukheon, Seongyojang, SunDuBu Village and Gyeongpodae before reaching Gyeongpo Beach. Bus 202-1 covers the same area in the opposite direction, so check the full route number before boarding your first bus.

Departure times and intervals may vary by date. Rather than relying on a fixed number of minutes in this article, check the Gangneung bus information system for the day of your visit.

Spend the morning at Ojukheon and Seongyojang

At Ojukheon, leave enough time for the municipal museum and for catching the next bus. There is no regular Monday closure, but the indoor exhibition rooms are closed on New Year's Day and on the day of Seollal and Chuseok. Check the visiting information in the hours panel below.

Ojukheon visiting hours

Admission closes at 17:00 and nobody is let in after that. The site opens every day of the year, but on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok only Ojukheon itself is open and the indoor galleries close.

Seongyojang is a historic house designated as National Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 5. Its operator publishes separate visiting and guided-tour times. Visiting hours end earlier in winter, so it is safer not to push this stop into the late afternoon during the shorter days of the year.

Gangneung City lists opening hours of 09:00–18:00 from March to October and 09:00–17:00 from November to February. The operator lists visiting and enquiry hours of 09:00–18:00 with ticket sales ending at 17:30, so check the latest ticketing notice before a visit from November to February.

Break the journey at SunDuBu Village for a meal

Bus 202 passes SunDuBu Village between Seongyojang and Gyeongpodae. If you want to add a meal, you can leave the bus here and continue towards Gyeongpodae on a later service. This itinerary does not repeat restaurant prices or opening hours; use the Gangwon food guide and the latest information for the individual venue.

Do not plan a full circuit of Gyeongpo Lake

Gyeongpodae is open year-round with free admission, and the circuit of Gyeongpo Lake is 4.3 kilometres. The itinerary allows time for the pavilion and a short section of the lakeside, not for walking all the way around the lake. If you want a longer lakeside walk, shorten the Anmok stop or finish your day in the Gyeongpo area.

From the Gyeongpodae. Chamsoori Museum stop, bus 202 continues to its terminus at Gyeongpo Beach. Use the beach stop for a short walk and the next connection rather than a long stay.

Continue to Anmok on the City 1 route

From Gyeongpo Beach, the City 1 bus runs past Gangmun, Songjeong and Anmok beaches to Anmok Coffee Street. The journey continues in one coastal direction, so there is no need to combine public transport with a hire car.

At Anmok, you can spend time along the seafront and the coffee street. Opening hours vary by venue, so do not assume that a particular café stays open late.

Return to Gangneung Station

After finishing at Anmok, take bus 223 back to Gangneung Station. Do not rely on a fixed final departure or journey time in this article; check the Gangneung bus information system for the date of your visit.

If it rains or the visiting day is shorter

In wet weather, give more time to the indoor exhibitions at Ojukheon and shorten the walks by the lake and beach. Only the indoor exhibition rooms at Ojukheon are closed on New Year's Day and on Seollal and Chuseok, while Seongyojang is closed on Seollal and Chuseok. Check the latest notices for both places and the bus service notice before travelling.

Seongyojang closes earlier in winter. Keep Ojukheon and Seongyojang at the beginning of the day rather than moving the heritage stops behind Gyeongpo and Anmok.

Shorten the route to half a day

If your time is limited, finish after Ojukheon, Seongyojang and Gyeongpodae. From Gyeongpodae, bus 202-1 runs back towards Gangneung Station through Seongyojang and Ojukheon. Leave Gyeongpo Beach and Anmok for another day.

Keep Jumunjin for a separate route

The City 1 route also runs in the opposite direction towards the Jumunjin area, but adding Jumunjin makes this day considerably longer. If you want to see the Jumunjin breakwater and market, plan them as a separate half-day rather than forcing them into this Gangneung and Gyeongpo itinerary.
