History

The village project team describes Daepyeong-dong (Namhang-dong) on Yeongdo as the site of Korea's first modern shipyard, established in the late 19th century, and the birthplace of its modern shipbuilding industry. Modern industrial heritage and resources reflecting local life remain here. The Kangkangee Arts Village project included restoring the Yeongdo ferry, improving the living environment through public art, presenting the village's history and stories in books and exhibitions through the village museum, and creating a community space for residents.

Ship experience space

Artists have fitted out a tugboat of a kind commonly seen at the village wharf (mulyangjang) as a ship experience space. The Floating Garden, inside and outside the boat, also provides an onboard place to rest in a village with little green space.
