Seonyudo Park

선유도공원

An island waterworks on the Han that was turned into a park without being torn down. Its concrete tanks and settling basins remain, now planted as beds and ponds, and unlike most city parks it keeps set hours and shuts at midnight.

History

Seonyudo was a small island with a hill in the middle of the Hangang River, visited by artists and poets. Seonyubong peak lost its former appearance during the Japanese colonial period. The island later housed a water purification plant supplying south-western Seoul before becoming a park.

What to see

Story Hall

The Story Hall occupies a converted water-supply pump house and covers the history and culture of Seonyudo and the Hangang River. It has a space for reflection on the upper floor, a temporary exhibition hall on the ground floor and a permanent video exhibition hall below ground.

Yanghwa Hangang Park

A 5.9 km stretch of the south bank from the mouth of the Yeouido Saetgang up to Gayang Bridge. Roses come out from May along the cycle path under Seonyu Bridge, and exit 4 of Dangsan station reaches the park directly over a 200 m footbridge with a lift on it. The operator singles out the view from its broad riverside lawn as one that is hard to find elsewhere.

Mangwon Hangang Park

A 7.4 km stretch of the north bank between Wonhyo Bridge and Seongsan Bridge. Its flood plain is open lawn with long sightlines, and downstream of Seongsan Bridge sits Seoul Battleship Park, built around three decommissioned naval vessels. Mangwon is not on the operator's list of the river's twelve bicycle-hire points, so a bike has to be brought here or hired in another district.

It opens at 10:00, later than Seoul's other well-known markets, which makes it a practical first stop after a slow start.
