Three Days in Seoul, One District a Day: Jongno, the West and the Southeast

With three days in Seoul, do not simply add more stops to a two-day route. Give each day its own district. Jongno, Hongdae and Mangwon, and Gangnam and Jamsil are far enough apart that crossing between them repeatedly consumes a meaningful part of the day.

Day one combines Gyeongbokgung with a museum, a Seochon market, and Bukchon. Day two runs west from Hongdae through the Gyeongui Line Forest Park and Mangwon Market to the Han River. Day three begins at Bongeunsa and continues to the observatory and riverside in Jamsil.

This itinerary stays inside Seoul. Suwon, Paju, Nami Island, and other day trips work better as separate full-day plans with their own transport and reservation checks.

Day 1: A palace, its museum, and Seochon

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Begin at Gyeongbokgung. For a first palace visit, its broad central axis and major halls provide a clear introduction to Seoul’s royal architecture. Opening and last-entry times vary, so check the latest place information.

Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays. If your first day falls on Tuesday, begin with day two and return to Jongno later.

National Palace Museum of Korea

Continue to the National Palace Museum of Korea nearby. Seeing the palace grounds first and then the objects and records used by the royal household gives the museum a useful context.

Check its current closure and late-opening information before visiting. On a rainy day, shorten the outdoor palace section and spend more time inside the museum.

Tongin Market

Use Tongin Market as the meal and rest point for the first day. Placing lunch inside the route avoids leaving the district to search for a restaurant.

Bukchon Hanok Village

Finish the day in Bukchon. After the formal royal spaces of Gyeongbokgung and the museum, Bukchon introduces the residential lanes where hanok buildings remain part of a living neighborhood.

Some streets are subject to visitor restrictions and residential-protection rules. Follow local signs, keep entrances clear, and avoid blocking narrow lanes.

Day 2: Hongdae to the Han River

Hongdae Walking Street

Start the second day in Hongdae. This is better treated as an urban starting point than as a single attraction requiring a fixed visit. Walk the main streets and choose only the shops or venues that match your interests.

Businesses and performances change by day and time, so no particular event is essential to the itinerary.

Gyeongui Line Forest Park

Continue through part of the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. The linear park provides a quieter walking connection after Hongdae’s commercial streets.

There is no need to complete the full park. Use the section that supports the route toward Mangwon. In heavy rain, replace this outdoor section with KT&G Sangsangmadang or another indoor Hongdae stop.

Mangwon Market

Use Mangwon Market for lunch or snacks. Choosing after you arrive keeps the plan flexible and avoids building the day around a restaurant whose hours may change.

Jamsil Hangang Park

There is no need to cover the whole park, particularly after three days of walking. A short rest by the river is enough to close the itinerary.

Why the itinerary is divided this way

Day one focuses on royal Seoul and residential lanes. Day two combines the western commercial district with a park, market, and riverside. Day three pairs a temple with the modern skyline and the Han River.

Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon also appear in the two-day itinerary because they are difficult to omit from a first visit. Their role here is different: the first day moves more slowly by adding the museum and Tongin Market instead of linking two palaces in succession.

What to do when it rains

On day one, increase the time at the National Palace Museum or National Folk Museum. On day two, use Sangsangmadang or another indoor Hongdae stop and skip the riverside. On day three, consider COEX Aquarium, Starfield Library, or Starfield COEX Mall.

In sustained rain, choosing two or three indoor stops within one district is better than preserving every outdoor stop.

Keep meals inside each district
