One day in Jeju City — the hours are published, but they do not belong to the places

A day inside Jeju City looks like it should be easy to schedule. All four places publish their opening hours.

Put the four side by side, though, and the same thing happens at each. The published clock is not the whole place's. One belongs to a single building, one is an average across stalls, one covers the indoor halls alone, and one this site cannot render as a table at all.

Four properties of this day

  Woojin Haejangguk's 06:00-22:00 is the main building. The annexe runs separately and takes a weekday off, and the publisher says to check its hours by telephone.

• 🧮It is an average across stalls

  Dongmun Market's daytime hours carry the publisher's own caveat: average hours, varying by stall. They are not a promise that any one stall is open then.

• 🌳It is the indoor halls' clock

  Halla Arboretum's grounds and paths are open at all times; only the indoor facilities carry hours. The arboretum separately says the outdoor paths may be walked until 23:00.

• 🌙And one of them has no table at all

  Sinseoloreum opens in the morning and shuts in the small hours of the next day. This site's data cannot yet express a rule that crosses midnight, so that clock lives in this article's prose instead.

Why this route has no arrival times

Two other Jeju routes on this site dropped the clock for two different reasons. The Seogwipo south coast had no opening times published at all, and the eastern day had published durations, so it used those.

This is the third case. Times are published in abundance here — but each one points at something different. Lay a timetable of arrivals over values like that and the timetable looks precise while nobody can say how far its precision reaches.

🔵 Distances can be stated. These are straight lines between coordinates this site already holds: 0.55 km from Woojin Haejangguk to Dongmun Market, 5.65 km on to Halla Arboretum, and 6.09 km from there to Sinseoloreum. Geometry needs no source. They are neither walking distances nor driving distances.

🔴 And this route doubles back. The two ends are 2.09 km apart. Read by longitude the day goes east, then west, then east again. A route planned off a map would not come out in this order — and it does not have to, because the map is not what ordered this day.

Woojin Haejangguk — the table is the main building

Those are the main building's hours. The annexe opens later and closes earlier, and it takes a weekday off that the main building works.

The main building closes over the Seollal and Chuseok holidays.

Dongmun Market — remember the gate numbers, not the hours

0.55 km from the first stop, the shortest leg of this route. The oldest and largest market on Jeju, opened in 1945, with twelve entrances.

The day market's 07:00–21:00 is published as an average: individual shops keep their own hours. The night market closes when its stock runs out, whatever the time says.

🔴 The publisher attaches a caveat to the daytime row above — average hours, varying by stall. So that span is not a building opening and shutting; it is a figure drawn from the stalls, and it does not promise that any particular one is trading.

🔵 What is firm is elsewhere. The food alley runs between gates 8 and 10, and the night market sets up near gate 8. Those two numbers are more use than the times.

The night market is a separate operator in the same market

The night-market row sitting beside the daytime one above is run separately, and its opening shifts by an hour with the season.

🔵 There is a public car park, and the first 30 minutes are free.

Halla Arboretum — only the indoor halls have doors

5.65 km west of the market. An arboretum inside the city on the slope of Gwangi Oreum, holding some 1,100 native and subtropical species. The walking course through the forest-bathing grounds runs 1.7 km and climbs almost to the top of the oreum before coming back down.

🔴 That table is the indoor facilities. The outdoor grounds and paths are open at all times, year round, and the arboretum separately states that the outdoor paths may be walked until 23:00. So what the table above limits is whether you can see the halls. If you came to walk, it does not apply to you.

🔵 The indoor facilities close on Seollal and Chuseok themselves. And the arboretum says in advance that the rare-plant and orchid halls are not opened when upkeep requires. A green table is not a promise that those particular doors are open that day.

🔵 Visit Jeju rates this site 'easy' to reach, and records low-floor bus access, an accessible toilet, a lift and accessible parking. Of the four stops, this is the one with the best such rating.

🔵 A packed meal may be eaten only in the rest area below the car park, and may not be carried beyond it.

Sinseoloreum — the hours this site could not put in a table

6.09 km back towards the centre. A momguk house that also serves dombe-gogi, certified as a Hundred-Year Shop.

🔴🔴 This stop has no hours table. The other three do, and the reason this one does not is not a missing source. It opens in the morning and shuts in the small hours of the next day — Visit Jeju's old-guard round-up gives the hours as 'Tue–Sun 08:00–04:00, closed Monday'. This site's data shape cannot yet express a rule that crosses midnight, so this sentence is carrying what a table would otherwise carry.

🔴 And the opening and closing times are not on the restaurant's own page. What Sinseoloreum's Visit Jeju entry puts in its visitor notes is 'last order 03:00 / closed every Monday', and nothing else. The opening and closing come from the themed round-up. Two pages from the same publisher hold one half each about one restaurant, and the case for putting this stop at the end of the day only exists once you put the halves together.

The four close on four different days

🔴 Come on a Monday and the end of the day is gone; come on a Tuesday and half the first stop is. Neither collapses the route, but on those two weekdays it is worth deciding the substitute before you set out.

🔵 The two middle stops do not break on any weekday. The market trades through the public holidays, and the arboretum's grounds are open at all times even when the halls are shut.
