A Half-Day Walk in Suwon: Hwaseong Haenggung, Suwon Hwaseong and Haengnidan-gil

Suwon Hwaseong is a large historic site where it helps to separate a palace visit from a walk on the fortress. This route visits Hwaseong Haenggung before its last-admission time, follows a section of the wall from Seojangdae to Banghwasuryujeong, and finishes at Haengnidan-gil.

It is not a complete circuit of the fortress. The route starts by public transport from Suwon Station and continues on foot within the historic area. It does not depend on the Hwaseong Trolley or a museum visit, so their operating days do not determine the whole plan.

Who this route is for

This route suits travellers who want to treat Hwaseong Haenggung and Suwon Hwaseong as separate visits rather than one attraction. The palace has its own visiting hours and admission fee, while the fortress is open at all times without charge. Keeping them separate makes it easier to see the palace before last entry and continue along the wall afterwards.

The route does not attempt a full circuit of Suwon Hwaseong or include Suwon Hwaseong Museum. This itinerary uses only the section linking Seojangdae, Hwaseomun, Janganmun and Banghwasuryujeong.

Starting from Suwon Station

Official guidance gives a route from the Novotel bus stop near Suwon Station Exit 4: take bus 11 or 13, get off at the stop named 「화성행궁·수원성지」, and continue on foot. The Korean stop name is retained here because an official English stop name was not confirmed. The itinerary gives only the boarding and alighting points found in the official guidance, not a fixed service interval or journey time.

The official page explains the outward journey from Suwon Station but does not give the return direction. When leaving the final stop, check the latest route information at the stop you plan to use.

1. Hwaseong Haenggung: visit the timed site first

Hwaseong Haenggung is designated as a historic site separately from Suwon Hwaseong. Admission includes Hwaryeongjeon, and the palace has set visiting hours and an admission fee, unlike the fortress. Visiting it first leaves the open fortress section for later in the route.

2. Suwon Hwaseong: walk one section, not the full circuit

Continue from Hwaseong Haenggung towards Seojangdae, then follow the fortress past Hwaseomun and Janganmun to Banghwasuryujeong. This order follows the sequence presented in an official Suwon Hwaseong sightseeing course. Seojangdae is a military command post on the summit of Paldalsan, after which the route links gates and other fortress structures.

The Suwon Hwaseong wall is open at all times and has no admission charge. Do not apply the palace's hours and admission fee to the fortress as a whole. At Banghwasuryujeong, leave the wall for Haengnidan-gil rather than continuing around the entire fortress.

Allow a separate day if you want to walk the full fortress or extend the route to more gates. This article uses part of an official course sequence and does not present the total length of the fortress as the distance walked on this half-day route.

3. Haengnidan-gil: keep the final stop flexible

Haengnidan-gil is a street rather than a site with a last-admission time. Adjust the final part of the route according to how long you spent at the palace and on the fortress. Follow the published hours of a particular business if you have chosen one, or use the remaining time to look around the street.

There is no single opening time or closing day for the whole street. The itinerary therefore gives a stay at Haengnidan-gil without fixing the hours or last orders of individual businesses in the article.

What this half day leaves out

The Hwaseong Trolley departs from Yeonmudae and does not operate on Mondays or in snow and rain. This itinerary is designed as a walking route, so the three stops do not depend on the trolley.

Suwon Hwaseong Museum is also outside this half-day plan. It has separate visiting hours and closes on Mondays, so check its operating day before adding it before or after the route.
