What to see

Mandaeru

A pavilion standing before 1717 and a Treasure since 2020. It is read as the best of its kind precisely for what it does not do — the ornament is held back and the landscape is let in instead, and from it the cliff the academy is named after resolves into one view.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Hahoe Village to Byeongsan Seowon?

City bus 210, three services a day, leaving Andong at 08:20, 11:00 and 14:05 — about 80 minutes, flat fare 1,500 won. On foot from Hahoe it is an hour and a quarter on an unpaved road; by car it is about ten minutes.

Is Byeongsan Seowon a UNESCO World Heritage site?

Yes. It was inscribed in 2019 as one of the nine Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies, and has been Historic Site No. 260 since 1978.

How long does a visit take?

Andong City's own estimate is about 30 minutes to walk round. Allow an hour if you want to sit on Mandaeru, which is the reason to come.

Stories about this place

  • Byeongsan Seowon: How a School Became a Shrine

It started as a village schoolhouse in 1563, was moved because the old site was too near the road, burned in the Imjin War, and only became a seowon in 1614 when a shrine was added. That sequence is the clearest answer to what a seowon actually was.

  • Three Places to Visit in Andong: Hahoe Village, Buyongdae and Byeongsan Seowon

Three places in Andong compared on what you see, how you get there and how long each takes. Buyongdae is 448 metres from Hahoe Village in a straight line and Byeongsan Seowon 3.1 km, but the first has no river crossing and the second has three buses a day out of it, so the journeys shape the day.
