Four drama filming locations in Suwon — one fortress carries four shows, the other three carry one each

The filming locations Suwon City names, limited to the four this site holds a place record for, set out by work, spot and location. Hwaseong is not one spot but three — Namporu, the palace and Hwahongmun — and only the palace has a gate and a fare.

Janganmun, the north gate of Hwaseong Fortress, its two-storey pavilion above the stone arch with the wall running to either side

Suwon City publishes its own list of the drama filming locations in the city. This roundup covers the four of them that this site holds a place record for. The city names a good many more — Hwaseomun, Haengridan-gil and Gwanggyo Lake Park among them — and where there is no record there is nothing we can confirm for you beyond an address, so those are not here.

One of the four is a fortress; the other three are one show each. Only Hwaseong carries several, and it carries them at different points inside the walls.

One fortress, split into three spots

Suwon City names three points inside Hwaseong for three different shows — Namporu for Twenty-Five Twenty-One and Itaewon Class, Hwaseong Haenggung for Love in the Moonlight, and Hwahongmun with Banghwasuryujeong and Yongyeon for Lovely Runner. The Korea Tourism Organization names the same Namporu spot.

So Hwaseong is one entry on this list and three points on the ground, walked between along the wall. The other three — Ilwol Arboretum, Wolhwawon Garden and Suwon Hallim Library — carry one show each and sit in different districts.

Only one of the four has a gate and a fare

The Hwaseong wall itself is open all year with no set hours and costs nothing. The admission and the last-entry time belong to Hwaseong Haenggung inside it, which is the Love in the Moonlight spot. Walking the wall and going into the palace are best treated as two separate items when you plan. The amounts and the times are on this list's cards.

The library is a library first

Suwon Hallim Library is a working facility its readers are using. Being a filming location does not change the rules of a reading room, so look around without getting in the way. It is the southernmost of the four, so it fits better as an addition to a trip into Gwonseon-gu than as a stop bundled with the other three.

    Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

The only one of the four that carries several shows, and it carries them at different points along the wall. Suwon City names Namporu for Twenty-Five Twenty-One and Itaewon Class, Hwaseong Haenggung for Love in the Moonlight, and Hwahongmun with Banghwasuryujeong and its pond for Lovely Runner. One card holds them, but they are separate points you walk between — and this is also the only entry on the list with a gate and a fare.

    Ilwol Arboretum

The municipal arboretum Suwon City names for Queen of Tears. It sits among the closer ones to the fortress and yet reads nothing like it — the fortress is something you walk, this is a greenhouse and a path around the water, so adding it changes the grain of the day rather than extending it.

    Wolhwawon Garden, Hyowon Park

The spot for Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. What earns it a place here is that the list has two period-drama spots written in different grammars — if Hwaseong Haenggung is a Joseon palace, this is a garden laid out the Chinese way, with walls, pavilions and a pond, and that difference stays on screen.

    Suwon Hallim Library

The municipal library Suwon City names for The King: Eternal Monarch. It is the only entry here that is not a visitor attraction but a working public facility, so it suits a stop you add when you are already nearby rather than a destination. What applies here is library manners, not filming-location ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see all four in one day?

By distance, yes. The two furthest apart — Ilwol Arboretum and Hallim Library — are a little over 7 km in a straight line, and the rest are closer. The catch is that Hwaseong is effectively three spots, so you walk a fair way inside the fortress alone. Giving the fortress its time and adding one of the other three works better than forcing all four.

Why is Hwaseong a single entry?

Suwon City names Namporu, Hwaseong Haenggung, Hwahongmun and Banghwasuryujeong for different shows, but all four are structures of one fortress. This list is built on place records, so they arrive as one entry. On the ground, treat them as separate points you walk between along the wall.

Is there an admission charge at Hwaseong?

Not for the wall itself. The Suwon Cultural Foundation states that the fortress wall is open all year with no set hours. The charge and the last-entry time apply to Hwaseong Haenggung inside it — which is exactly the Love in the Moonlight spot. The amounts and times are on this list's cards.

Are these the only filming locations Suwon names?

No. Suwon City's drama filming-location course names a good many more — Hwaseomun, Haengridan-gil, Gwanggyo Lake Park and the Haenggung-dong mural village among them. This list covers the four that this site holds a place record for. For the others there is nothing we can confirm for you beyond an address, so they are not here.

Can I just walk into Hallim Library?

It is a working municipal library before it is a filming location. Look around without photographing the reading rooms or getting in the way of the people using them. Being a filming location does not create an exception.
