Period-Drama Filming Locations in Namwon, Gapyeong and Seocheon

Gwanghalluwon gathers the pavilion, the pond and Ojakgyo Bridge inside one garden, so you can see it all in a single visit. It fits naturally into a day in Namwon.

The Garden of Morning Calm is the easiest option to combine with a trip from Seoul. The filming location is only one part of an arboretum that changes with the season.

Munheonseowon suits travellers who would rather see academy buildings, a pond and the pine wood behind them than flowers and gardens. Add it to a day in Seocheon or Gunsan.

If you have not fixed a region, you can narrow it down by drama instead. Going by the works the Korea Tourism Organization names:

• The King's Affection — appears at both Gwanghalluwon and Munheonseowon.
• Love in the Moonlight — appears at both the Garden of Morning Calm and Munheonseowon.
• Our Blooming Youth, Captivating the King — of these three, only at Gwanghalluwon.
• The Red Sleeve — of these three, only at the Garden of Morning Calm.

To cover The King's Affection and Love in the Moonlight in one place, go to Munheonseowon. KTO does not say which scenes were filmed, though, so even choosing by drama, what you will be seeing on the ground is the place itself.

The Garden of Morning Calm — the opening hours are in the table below, and during the winter lighting festival the timetable itself changes. Without a car, you can take the Gapyeong tourist shuttle bus: the arboretum is the last stop on Course B. The shuttle does not run on Wednesdays unless the Wednesday is a public holiday, so avoid Wednesdays if you are going by bus. Pets are not admitted.

Garden of Morning Calm opening hours

During the Lighting Festival the arboretum runs on the second timetable instead of the standing one, not as well as it. Last admission is one hour before closing, which is the rule the operator publishes; 18:00 is that rule applied to the standing 19:00 close, and the festival bands move it with them. The festival dates are given as early December to mid-March rather than as fixed days, so the months above are the operator's own approximation. Tickets are sold at the gate only — there is no online purchase and no booking is needed. Re-entry after leaving is not permitted, and admission is not refunded for rain.

For Gwanghalluwon and Munheonseowon, the Korea Tourism Organization material this article cites gives no opening hours, admission charges or public-transport directions. Check visiting hours, closing days and bus connections with Namwon's and Seocheon's official tourism information before you fix the day.

For Munheonseowon, KTO names the time when the crape myrtle and the lotus are in bloom as the best time to visit. If the flowers are the point, confirm when that is with the official information before you go.

If rain is forecast, note that the Garden of Morning Calm does not refund admission for rain and does not let you back in once you have left. If the weather is doubtful, move the day.

If you are heading to Gapyeong without a car on a Wednesday, the shuttle is not running, so arrange other transport in advance or change the date.
