What to see
History and Culture Hall
The history and culture hall for Yungneung and Geolleung first opened in 2011 and was reorganised in 2021. Its displays cover the Joseon royal tombs as a World Heritage site, Yungneung and Geolleung and the people buried in them, and the making of Hyeollyungwon alongside Geolleung’s first burial site.

Jaesil (Ritual House)
The ritual house is both the working quarters of the officials who managed the tomb and the place where the memorial rites were prepared.

Yungneung
Yungneung is the tomb of Jangjo, raised to emperor posthumously, and Empress Heongyeong of the Hong clan. The two lie together under a single mound. That mound carries a screen of stone panels and no balustrade; the panels are carved with peonies and lotuses after the example of Injo’s Jangneung, and the stones that pin them are cut as flower buds. In front of the red spirit gate lies Gonsinji, a round pond said to have been made on geomantic grounds.

Geolleung
Geolleung is the tomb of Jeongjo, the 22nd king of Joseon, and Empress Hyoui of the Kim clan. The two lie together under a single mound. Unlike Yungneung this mound has no screen of stone panels, only a balustrade, and its stone figures follow the form prescribed for a royal tomb. The civil figures wear the gold-crowned ceremonial court dress, as Yungneung’s do.
