Suncheonman Wetland
순천만습지
Almost everything here is built to be hard to see. The street lamps were cut down to head height and fitted with reflectors so the light would not reach roosting birds, the boardwalk and signs were designed to disappear when viewed from a bird's altitude, and the rest shelters are made from scrapped boats. Read the site as a set of decisions about birds and it stops looking like a park.

- Ticketing closes first and the grounds an hour later — the operator writes the viewing window as the rule "one hour from the admission deadline", and the combined Suncheonman timetable publishes the same values as clock times. The lamps go out at closing, so after sunset there is roughly half an hour of usable skylight and walking out after dark carries a risk the operator warns about. The night observatory runs to 22:00 on a seasonal programme, booked online in advance, entering through the exit gate from thirty minutes before the start.

What to see
Nature Ecology Centre
The learning space for the bay's history and the creatures in it, with guides on hand to walk you through it.
Astronomical Observatory
Korea's first observatory built on flat ground, for birds by day and stars by night. The reasoning is written down on site: approach the geese and they leave, so the building exists to let people look without walking closer.
History Hall
Archive, information desk and rest stop in one building.
Suncheon Literature Hall
Given to two writers from Suncheon, Jeong Chae-bong and Kim Seung-ok.
Yongsan Observatory
Rebuilt in 2025 as a two-storey timber structure of 124.88 m². It is about a thirty-minute climb from the Yongsan entrance, and it is where the S-shaped channel, the reeds, the seepweed and the crane grounds all resolve into one view.
The reed-bed boardwalk
The reed bed was 150,000 pyeong in 1997 and is 1.6 million now. Where the river meets the sea a salt marsh forms and mudflat builds beyond it — this is the one place the whole sequence can be seen at once, which is why geologists come.
Mujingyo Bridge
The arched bridge that puts you onto the reed-bed boardwalk.
The lawn
Five sculptures line the path in from the entrance and three more stand in front of the ecology centre; during the reed festival the concerts and photography shows are held here.
The ecology cruise
A boat run along the S-shaped channel, close in to the mudflat, the reeds, the birds and what lives under the mud.

A ticket is valid for the day it is bought, and a wetland ticket admits you to Suncheonman National Garden 7km away — show it at the gate. The garden's discounted night ticket is the exception: it does not admit you here.

The half-price night ticket is the thing to understand before buying. It goes on sale at 17:00, and the operator publishes a list of what has already shut by then — the zoo, the therapy garden, then the big wheel and the Sky Cube. The wetland it will not admit you to at all.

A pufferfish house in Yeonhyang-dong. Its Century Shop citation records thirty years of the owner dressing the fish by hand each day.
Geomok Sundae Gukbap
A sundae-gukbap house in Pungdeok-dong. Its Century Shop citation records that from 1996 it put bean sprouts in the soup and served the rice apart — the first in Suncheon to do so.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the reed beds in circles?
Reed spreads mainly from severed root rather than seed. A colony builds up sediment at its centre, then pushes shoots outward at an even rate, so it grows as a circle. The beds have gone from 150,000 pyeong in 1997 to about 1.6 million.
How do I get there by public transport?
Bus 66 from Suncheon Station or the intercity terminal to the Suncheonman Wetland stop, running 06:05 to 22:00 about every 25 minutes — around 35 minutes from the station.
