Olleung Royal Tomb

온릉

The tomb of Queen Dangyeong, Jungjong’s first queen. She was buried as a deposed consort and restored some 180 years later, at which point the grave became a royal tomb. It is one of the few Joseon royal tombs that charges no admission.

Married Grand Prince Jinseong
The daughter of Sin Su-geun, she became the wife of Grand Prince Jinseong, the future King Jungjong.

Made queen, then deposed after seven days
She became queen when the 1506 coup put her husband on the throne, but because her father had opposed the coup, its leaders had her deposed seven days later.

Died at 71
Her grave was made in the burial ground of her own family, the Geochang Sin clan.

Restored 182 years after her death
She received the title Queen Dangyeong and the tomb the name Olleung. It followed the precedent of the tombs of other queens honoured after death, Jeongneung (Queen Sindeok) and Sareung (Queen Jeongsun).

What to see

Olleung

Olleung is the tomb of Queen Dangyeong of the Sin clan, first queen of Jungjong, the 11th king of Joseon. She died in 1557 as a deposed consort and was buried on this site. In 1739 she was restored as Queen Dangyeong, the grave was renamed Olleung and rebuilt to the form of a royal tomb. Its mound has neither a screen of stone panels nor a balustrade; around it stand civil figures, stone horses, a stone lantern, an offering table, stone pillars and stone sheep and tigers.

Seooreung Royal Tombs

Five royal tombs and three lesser graves in one wood. Sukjong lies here with two of his queens, and so does Jang Hui-bin — one reign’s cast inside a single set of walls. It opens at 07:00 under the early-admission rule.

Jeongneung Royal Tomb

It opens at 06:00 under the early-admission rule, so it doubles as a morning walking route. It is the tomb of Queen Sindeok, King Taejo’s second queen, and its stone lantern is the oldest stone object at any Joseon royal tomb.
