History
The name ‘Kkangtong’, meaning ‘tin can’, is said to come from the US military canned goods sold here during the Vietnam War. The market adjoins Gukje Market, so a walk through Nampo-dong can lead through both. While Gukje is a market for all kinds of goods, Bupyeong Kkangtong centres more on food; it also sells seafood, fruit and vegetables, grains and side dishes.
What to see
Fish cake alley
Fish cakes of different shapes and sizes, including squares, triangles and circles, line one alley.
Stuffed tofu and tteokbokki
Yubu jeongol combines tofu pockets filled with glass noodles and vegetables with hot broth; it, tteokbokki and mul-tteok have long been the market's signature dishes. The tteokbokki shop featured on television still draws a crowd.
The arcade after dark
After sunset, the arcade lights illuminate the market ceiling like chandeliers.
