Getting from Gwangju Airport into Gwangju

Gwangju Airport is inside Gwangju. Its address is in Gwangsan-gu, one of the city's own districts. This guide exists anyway, for one reason: only three buses call at the airport, and none of them goes downtown.

The answer is the metro. Airport station on Line 1 is by the terminal, and that line runs straight to Geumnam-ro and the Asia Culture Center.

The buses do not go downtown

The airport's transport page sorts buses into limousine, local and wide-area. The limousine tab is empty, and what the other two hold is the three below. That is the whole list.

All three do reach Gwangju Songjeong station. Just past it all three turn west or south, and none of them touches Sangmu or Geumnam-ro.

Read those headways again

Songjeong 100 runs every 65 to 95 minutes, Songjeong 97 every 90 to 100. They are published as headways rather than as departure times, so missing one can cost you over an hour. Against a metro running every 8 to 10 minutes off-peak, the choice is usually not close.

Line 1, from the terminal to the platform

Gwangju Metro Line 1 is a single line from Pyeongdong to Nokdong, and Airport is station number 115 on it. Nothing between here and downtown needs a change.

Leave the terminal towards Sangmu-daero. That is the wide road past the front of the terminal, and the overhead signs point to the metro station along with everything else.

Choose your direction on the platform. The plate above the screen doors is what decides it. Kim Daejung Convention Center is the way into the city; Songjeong Park is the way out to Gwangju Songjeong station and Pyeongdong. Board the wrong one and you are heading for the city boundary rather than the centre.

How many minutes from the airport

Read from the operator's timetables. Stations not listed here vary by a minute depending on which train you take, so check those on the Gwangju Regional Transit Corporation's timetable.

Sangmu — 5 minutes. The city hall and the business district.
Uncheon — 7 minutes.
Hwajeong — 10 minutes.
Yangdong Market — 15 minutes, for the market the station is named after.
Geumnamno 5(o)-ga — 17 minutes, at the north end of Geumnam-ro.
Culture Complex — 20 minutes. The Asia Culture Center, Chungjang-ro and Dongmyeong-dong.

The fare is the same wherever you go

Gwangju's metro is a flat fare — one stop or nineteen, the same money, so there is nothing to work out per section.

Flat fare — One fare applies across the whole line. It costs the same from the airport to any station on it.
Adult (19 to 64), transit card — KRW 1,250.
Adult, single-journey ticket — KRW 1,400.
Youth (13 to 18), transit card — KRW 900.
Youth, single-journey ticket — KRW 1,400 — the same as an adult. The youth discount applies only on a transit card.
Child (6 to 12) — KRW 500, by transit card or single-journey ticket alike.
Infant (under 6) — Free. But where an infant travels alone, or with a guardian who is not family, the third and further infants pay.
Concession — over-65s, disabled veterans, those injured in the May 18 Democratic Uprising, disabled people, independence patriots and others — Free on production of identification. One companion travelling to care directly for a severely disabled person, or for a first-grade disabled veteran or independence patriot, is included.
Group ticket, 20 or more — Twenty or more travelling the same section and route get 10% off the transit-card fare. One leader per twenty travels free, and middle- and high-school groups count as youths.
Internal transfer — metro, city bus, village bus — Free and unlimited in number, within 30 minutes of the first alighting. Transit card only, and you must tap the card on the exit reader as you get off.
Wide-area transfer — county buses (Naju, Damyang, Hwasun, Hampyeong, Jangseong and others) — 50% off, once only, with the out-of-boundary supplement charged separately. Where both origin and destination are inside Gwangju, this discount does not apply.

Do not plan from the airport page's figures

The airport's subway guidance says "hours 05:50–22:40 / 38 minutes end to end". Set against the operator's tables, 05:50 is the first train from Airport station in the direction away from the city; the first city-bound one is 05:37. No train in either direction corresponds to 22:40, and the line takes 33 minutes end to end, not 38.

The same page's station list also names Songjeong-ri and Geumnamno 3(sam)-ga, and the operator's list has no such stations — they are Gwangju Songjeong Station and Geumnamno 4(sa)-ga. Check your times on the operator's timetable before you set out.

🔵 Two rows are worth pausing on. KRW 4,000 to Gwangju Songjeong is a fair contest with two metro stops if you are carrying luggage, and KRW 15,000 to the Asia Culture Center goes to the same place the metro reaches in 20 minutes for KRW 1,250.

Two stops the other way, to Gwangju Songjeong

For a KTX connection, or for a meal in Songjeong-dong, you want the opposite direction. Take a Songjeong Park train and ride two stops — Songjeong Park, then Gwangju Songjeong.

If you flew in internationally, this is not your airport

International flights for Gwangju land at Muan International Airport. That is a different journey. The buses Muan publishes are the two to and from Muan bus terminal, and there is no Gwangju-bound service among them. If you landed at Muan, check that day's connections at the airport information desk or on Muan's own site.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a limousine bus from Gwangju Airport into the city?

No. The limousine category on the airport's transport page is empty, and the only buses calling here are Songjeong 100, Songjeong 97 and Bitgaram 1160. All three run via Gwangju Songjeong station and then turn west or south; none goes downtown. The public transport that does is Metro Line 1.

How long to Geumnam-ro and Chungjang-ro?

Twenty minutes to Culture Complex station on Line 1. No change of train, and the fare is KRW 1,250 on a transit card.

What if I land late at night?

The last city-bound train from Airport station is 23:35. After that it is a taxi, and the airport's published estimates are KRW 15,000 to the Asia Culture Center and KRW 4,000 to Gwangju Songjeong station.

The airport website says the metro runs until 22:40.

That does not match the operator's per-station timetables. At Airport station the last city-bound train is 23:35 and the last one the other way is 23:52. The same guidance also names stations — Songjeong-ri, Geumnamno 3(sam)-ga — that are not on the operator's list, so check your times on the operator's timetable before you set out.
