One Day in Eastern Jeju: Geomunoreum, Manjanggul, Bijarim and Seongsan

A west-to-east route through four east Jeju sights, built around the one booking that must be made the day before, the three monthly closures that break it, and where to shorten the day if you start late.

Geomunoreum, Manjanggul, Bijarim and Seongsan Ilchulbong lie almost in a line across the east of Jeju, in order of longitude, which makes them an unusually tidy day by car. All four have a World Heritage guide service, so there is an official figure to lean on when deciding how long to allow at each one.

Only one of the four has a fixed time; the other three are walked into as you arrive. Planning this day therefore comes down to choosing a Geomunoreum departure and building outward from it. Geomunoreum's booking rules and route lengths, and Manjanggul's open section and what to bring, are set out in four places to visit in eastern Jeju; this page deals only with the order and the timing.

Four things to settle before you set off

Geomunoreum is the only booking
Booking closes the day before the walk, so the date and the route have to be settled in advance. The other three stops take no booking at all.
The allowances come from the guide service
The times in the panel are the durations the World Heritage Office publishes for each guided walk. They are a reasonable allowance even if you do not join a guide.
Three days a month to avoid
Geomunoreum, Manjanggul and Seongsan Ilchulbong close on three different weekdays, so no single choice of day avoids them all. Each closure, and what to do instead, is in the table further down.
Check the driving times yourself
The stops run west to east with no backtracking, but no official source gives the time between them. Look the legs up in a map app before you leave.

Why the order runs this way

The order is set by one booking and the map rather than by a clock. Geomunoreum is the only stop with a departure slot, so it goes first and the other three follow it eastward.

Measured as straight lines on map coordinates, it is 9.7 km from Geomunoreum to Manjanggul, 5.6 km from Manjanggul to Bijarim and 12.0 km from Bijarim to Seongsan Ilchulbong, with 20.3 km between the two ends. Road distances are longer than that, and the driving times are worth checking in a map app on the day.

That is also why each stop carries a length of stay rather than a start time. How long the legs take depends on the road and the traffic, and a fixed clock would mean one slow stop throwing out everything after it.

1. Geomunoreum: choosing a slot is the day's first decision

The last departure you can join is at 14:00. If you intend to fit in the other three stops, take an early slot. Sessions between 13:30 and 14:00 do not allow the full course or independent exploration, so check the available course before booking.

When you come out depends on which route you took, and the panel's allowance is for the shortest, the summit course. Choose the crater or full course instead and the morning is gone, turning this into a day of two or three stops rather than four.

Booking closes the day before the walk, so this day really begins the previous evening. It cannot be assembled over breakfast on the morning itself, and bad weather closes the site even with a booking, so check for notices before you drive out.

2. Manjanggul: allow for the walk back out

About 9.7 km north of Geomunoreum in a straight line. You return from the end of the open section the same way you went in, so the walk back belongs in the allowance as much as the walk in.

The viewing hours and ticketing time follow the visiting notice the World Heritage Office issued for the reopening on 30 May 2026: ticket sales end at 17:00 and the cave stays open until 18:00. The guide service runs 09:00 to 16:00, meeting at the ticket office, one hour, free, and signed up for on the spot. The walk is an out-and-back — the open section is 1 km one way, so you return by the way you came. The operator lists a torch and trainers as things to bring, and a raincoat and a warm layer in wet weather.

Use the Geomunoreum booking time as the day’s anchor, and check the later sites’ operating status and last admission before setting out.

3. Bijarim: the stop that absorbs the slack

About 5.6 km from Manjanggul, the shortest leg on the route. The guided walk meets at the ticket office.

The times above come from the Jeju Tourism Information Center's reply of 22 April 2024 in the Q&A panel of the same Visit Jeju page, not from its structured visitor information, which gives the ticketing deadline and year-round opening but no opening time at all. The reply is the only place the two appear together, and it adds that the ticket office confirmed entry is not permitted before ticketing opens.

It is the only one of the four with no regular closing day. If the earlier stops ran long, or you took one of Geomunoreum's longer courses, this is where the day gives or takes: dropping it does not break the route, and staying longer does not push against the next stop's deadline.

Ticketing stops before the gate does

The Jeju Tourism Information Center's reply in the Q&A panel of Visit Jeju's Bijarim page gives operating hours of 09:00 to 18:00 with ticketing closing at 17:00. If you are already running late, shorten Bijarim rather than moving it later.

4. Seongsan Ilchulbong: check the seasonal last-admission time

About 12.0 km from Bijarim, the longest leg and the furthest east of the four.

The opening and closing times swing widely by season: later opening and an earlier close in winter, and a pre-dawn opening in summer. Last admission falls an hour before closing, so the figure that governs the end of the day is the last admission rather than the closing time. Check the table for the month you are travelling before fixing the back half of the day.

The guided walk meets at the summit rather than at the ticket office. The climb is not inside what the panel allows, so budget for the ascent separately if you mean to join it.

If you are looking for a meal after the Seongsan Ilchulbong stop, nearby Jeju Ttukbaegi serves abalone-and-seafood stew and braised cutlassfish. Last orders are at 19:20, so check the restaurant's opening hours first if you reach Seongsan Ilchulbong late in the day.

When a stop is closed or the slots are full

Because the three closures fall on three different weekdays, no single choice of day avoids them all. In the first week of any month, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each knock out one stop in turn, so travelling from the Thursday is the simpler fix.

Slots fill, too. Geomunoreum caps the numbers on each departure, so the time you want may already be gone. If only a late slot is left, you can see Manjanggul first and take Geomunoreum in the middle of the day.

Shortening the day

If you only reach this side of the island in the afternoon, do not try for all four. Geomunoreum's last departure is at 14:00, so a late start is better spent on Manjanggul and Bijarim, or on Bijarim and Seongsan Ilchulbong. Seongsan Ilchulbong stays open into the evening for much of the year, which makes it the stop that survives a late day.

Itinerary

Day 1 · West to east, around a single booking

The four sit in order of longitude, so nothing on this route doubles back. What sets the order is not a clock but one booking and the map — Geomunoreum is the only stop with a departure slot, and the other three are walked into as you arrive. This itinerary is designed for travelling around eastern Jeju by rental car. Start by setting the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center as the navigation destination, arrive 10 minutes before the booked time, complete ticketing and check-in, and collect the entry pass at the visitor information centre.
