Yeongneung Royal Tombs of Sejong and Hyojong
영릉과 영릉
Sejong’s Yeongneung and Hyojong’s Yeongneung stand side by side — the first Joseon royal tomb to bury king and queen under one mound, and the first to stack their two mounds on one hillside. Admission is half what the other tombs charge.

What to see
King Sejong the Great History and Culture Hall
The King Sejong the Great History and Culture Hall first opened in 2017 and was partly reorganised in 2023. Its displays cover Sejong as the sage king of the nation, the Joseon royal tombs as a World Heritage site, and Hyojong and his resolve to march north.

The ritual house is both the working quarters of the officials who managed the tomb and the place where the memorial rites were prepared.

Yeongneung — King Sejong’s tomb
Sejong’s Yeongneung holds Sejong, the 4th king of Joseon, and his queen Soheon of the Sim clan. It was the first Joseon royal tomb to bury king and queen under a single mound. The original Yeongneung was laid out in 1446, when Queen Soheon died first, on the ground Inneung now occupies within Heonilleung, and Sejong was buried with her four years later. The site was judged inauspicious on geomantic grounds, and the tomb was moved here in 1469.

Ritual House at Hyojong’s Yeongneung
The ritual house is both the working quarters of the officials who managed the tomb and the place where the memorial rites were prepared. Hyojong’s is designated a Treasure: of all the ritual houses at the Joseon royal tombs it keeps the most of its original fabric — the anhyangcheong, the vessel store and the service range — and it shows the basic form of a ritual house most clearly.

Yeongneung — King Hyojong’s tomb
Hyojong’s Yeongneung holds Hyojong, the 17th king of Joseon, and his queen Inseon of the Jang clan. It was the first tomb to place the king’s and the queen’s mounds one above the other on a single hillside. The original was laid out in 1659, where Wolleung now stands within Donggureung, but its stone objects gave trouble from the moment it was built and needed repair after repair; for fear that rainwater was reaching the chamber it was moved here in 1673.
