The Garden of Morning Calm Guide

A private arboretum on the flank of Chungnyeongsan that opens every day of the year — and spends about a third of that year on a completely different timetable, because its winter light festival closes at 21:00 instead of 19:00.

A third of the year runs on a different clock

This is the single fact most guides get wrong, because they quote one set of hours.

The winter timetable exists for the Lighting Festival, which the operator describes as having become a fixture of the Korean winter. It is the only period when the garden both opens later and closes later, and it turns an afternoon walk into an evening one.

Everything else about access is unusually rigid, and all of it is published:

Tickets are sold at the gate only. There is no online purchase, and the operator says plainly that no booking is needed.
No re-entry once you leave.
No refund for rain.
Wheelchairs and pushchairs are lent at the ticket check: a 1,000-won deposit for a wheelchair, 2,000 for a pushchair including the deposit, both returned.

The price list, and the discount that does not stack

Tickets are cheaper for a group of 30 or more, and that group rate is unavailable at weekends and on public holidays.

Look at the last two rows. A Gapyeong resident pays the lowest adult price on the board, and is the only category with no group rate at all — the operator states it outright. Every discount needs the matching ID at the gate.

What is here in each season, according to the people who plant it

The arboretum publishes a page per season, and they are specific enough to plan around. Gapyeong-gun counts about 4,500 plant species, some 300 of them native to Baekdusan, across roughly twenty themed gardens and two exhibition halls; the arboretum's own copy says thirty gardens.

When to go

Spring
Blossom that outlasts Seoul's
It opens with yellow adonis, hirea and witch hazel, then tulips across the garden with Chungnyeongsan behind. The operator's own claim is the useful one: it is colder here than the capital region, so the cherry blossom is still going after Seoul's festivals have finished. Azaleas close the season.
Summer
Hydrangeas without going south
Perennials rather than mass planting — hydrangea, clematis, rose, peony, phlox, veronica, monarda, lily, daylily, water lily — in the Secret Garden, Seohwayeon, the Morning Calm Walk, the Moonlight Garden, the Hagyeong Garden and J's Cottage Garden. Two streams run down from the summit of Chungnyeongsan, with open platforms anyone may use.
Autumn
The mountain is the backdrop from everywhere
Chungnyeongsan turns from every viewpoint in the garden, with chrysanthemum scent through it and ginkgo along the walks. The pink muhly at its peak is the photographed one.
Winter
The Lighting Festival, and the hours change
Snow makes the plainest version of the garden, and the operator says the ink-painting look is the thing only winter gives. Then the lights come on and closing moves to 21:00, or 23:00 on a Saturday.

The rules are strict and worth reading before you drive out

The operator publishes a longer list of prohibitions than any other place in this guide, and several of them will catch an ordinary family day out.

No animals in the grounds at all. Not a leash rule — no entry.
No sports equipment, listed as balls, bicycles, kickboards and badminton.
No cooking anywhere, no flammable items, and no group buffets or catered lunch boxes brought in.
The whole site is non-smoking and alcohol-free.
Stay on the marked route. Taking plants, soil, stones or insects can mean removal and legal action.
No drones — not to fly and not to bring in — and no stepping into a bed to take a photograph.

Two practical notes. The family zoo is not inside the arboretum; it is a kilometre away, and it is a separate ticket. And there is no accommodation on site, so the last shuttle matters.

Getting here, and the bus that closes on Wednesday

The arboretum is the terminus of Course B of the Gapyeong tourist shuttle. Course B connects to Course A at Petite France, and one 8,000-won day ticket covers both with unlimited transfers.

The shuttle runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and is closed every Wednesday unless it is a public holiday. From Nami Island: leave at 09:05, change at Petite France 09:30, arrive 10:12. Back: leave the arboretum by 17:05 for the last connection, reaching Nami at 18:10. Later buses run from the arboretum — the last leaves at 18:25 — but they stop short of the transfer.

Group bookings are on 1544-6703, weekdays only and 30 people minimum.

Two hours is the honest minimum, and the mountain decides the rest

The garden is on a slope and it is graded — the operator's own seasonal pages keep pointing at the viewpoints, because the layout is designed to be looked down on. If you are here in the winter festival period, arrive around 16:00: you get the garden in daylight and the lights on the same ticket, and there is no re-entry if you try to split it.
