History
Unhyeongung was Gojong's home before he was king. The official history is blunt about what the place was like beforehand: until Heungseon Daewongun came to power it was unremarkable enough that you could not tell royalty lived there.
That changed immediately after Gojong's enthronement on 13 December 1863. Construction of the major buildings began about a month later, and the compound became the centre from which Daewongun exercised power. Norakdang was completed in September 1864, and it was there that Gojong and Queen Myeongseong were married on 21 March 1866. Irodang was added in 1869.
The site was designated a Historic Site on 22 November 1977.

What to see
Sujiksa Quarters
The wing to the right of the main gate, where the guards and caretakers lived. Its rooms are now furnished with a brazier, furniture and oil lamps to show how it was used.

Noandang Hall
The men's quarters, and Heungseon Daewongun's main residence. Raised and completed in 1864 alongside Norakdang; the name comes from a passage in the Analects about honouring the old and putting them at ease. The Yeonghwaru raised floor adjoins its front.

Norakdang Hall
The central building of Unhyeongung, used for the family's large occasions — sixtieth birthdays and banquets. It is described as being on a scale that stood comparison with a palace.

Irodang Hall
The women's quarters. 'Iro' — 'the two elders' — is read as Heungseon Daewongun and his wife, Lady Min of Yeoheung. It was built in 1869, later than Noandang and Norakdang in front of it.

The site is small and set directly on a main road at the Anguk Station exit, so it involves no long approach walk — the shortest arrival of any historic site in the area.
